What Is Japan's Digital Nomad Visa?
Japan launched its Digital Nomad Visa in April 2024, creating a legal pathway for remote workers to live and work in Japan for up to 6 months. Before this, nomads had to rely on the tourist visa — a legal gray area for anyone doing remote work.
The DN visa resolves this ambiguity: you can legally work for foreign clients while living in Japan.
Who Is Eligible?
To qualify for Japan's Digital Nomad Visa, you must meet these requirements:
- Nationality: You must be a citizen of a country that has a tax treaty with Japan (currently 50+ countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and most EU nations).
- Income: You must earn at least ¥10 million/year (~$70,000 USD) from remote work for employers or clients outside Japan.
- Health insurance: You must have private health insurance that covers your stay in Japan.
- No Japanese income: You cannot receive payment from Japanese companies or clients.
How Long Can You Stay?
The Digital Nomad Visa allows a maximum stay of 6 months. Unlike the tourist visa, there is no option to extend. After 6 months, you must leave Japan. You can re-apply, but there's no guaranteed re-entry.
Required Documents
When applying at a Japanese embassy or consulate, you'll typically need:
- Valid passport (6+ months remaining)
- Completed visa application form
- Passport-sized photo
- Proof of income (tax returns, bank statements, employment contract)
- Proof of health insurance covering Japan
- Itinerary or proof of accommodation
- Certificate of tax residency in your home country
Requirements may vary slightly by consulate. Always check with your local Japanese embassy.
How to Apply
- Check eligibility — Confirm your country has a tax treaty with Japan and you meet the income threshold.
- Gather documents — Prepare all required paperwork. Allow 2–4 weeks for this.
- Apply at your local Japanese embassy/consulate — Submit in person or by mail (varies by location).
- Wait for processing — Typically 5–10 business days.
- Enter Japan — Your visa is valid from the date of entry.
Digital Nomad Visa vs Tourist Visa
| Feature | Tourist Visa | Digital Nomad Visa | |---------|-------------|-------------------| | Max stay | 90 days (180 with extension) | 6 months | | Remote work | Gray area | Explicitly allowed | | Income requirement | None | ¥10M/year (~$70K) | | Application needed | No (visa exemption) | Yes | | Health insurance | Recommended | Required | | Re-entry | Easy | Possible but not guaranteed |
Should You Get It?
If you earn over $70K/year and plan to stay in Japan for 3–6 months, the Digital Nomad Visa is worth it. It removes legal ambiguity, and some landlords and banks may be more willing to work with you.
If you're staying under 90 days, the tourist visa (visa exemption) is simpler and works fine for most people.
Key Tips
- Apply early — Some consulates have limited appointment slots. Start the process 6–8 weeks before your planned arrival.
- Keep proof of foreign employment — Immigration may ask for evidence that you work for a non-Japanese entity.
- Tax implications — Under most tax treaties, you won't owe Japanese income tax for stays under 183 days. Consult a tax professional for your specific situation.
- This is a new visa — Rules may change. Check the Japanese Immigration Services Agency for the latest updates.
