Are you employed by a Japanese company?

You'll need a work visa (Engineer/Specialist in Humanities, etc.). This is outside our scope — consult an immigration lawyer.

Are you a freelancer wanting to stay long-term?

Options are limited. The DN visa is your best bet if you qualify. Otherwise, consider sequential 90-day stays with visa runs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work remotely on a tourist visa in Japan?

There is no explicit prohibition on working remotely for a foreign employer while on a tourist visa, as long as you are not employed by or paid by a Japanese entity. However, the intent of the tourist visa is sightseeing, so it's a gray area. The Digital Nomad Visa was created specifically to resolve this ambiguity.

How long can I stay in Japan as a tourist?

Citizens of 70+ countries can enter Japan visa-free for up to 90 days. Some nationalities can extend once for an additional 90 days (total 180 days) at an immigration office in Japan.

Do I have to pay taxes in Japan as a digital nomad?

Generally no, if you stay under 183 days in a calendar year and your employer/clients are outside Japan. The Digital Nomad Visa explicitly exempts holders from Japanese income tax. Consult a tax professional for your specific situation.

Can I open a bank account as a tourist?

Not easily. Most Japanese banks require a residence card. JP Bank (Japan Post) may allow it in some cases after 6 months of residency. Most short-term nomads use international ATMs and their home bank accounts.
